Definition of a Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun or a noun phrase to avoid repetition and make sentences clearer and less repetitive.
 
Example:
Ravi is a good student. He studies hard.
Here, “He” is a pronoun that replaces “Ravi”.
 

Parts / Types of Pronouns

There are several types of pronouns in English. The main types are:
 
  1. Personal Pronouns
  2. Possessive Pronouns
  3. Reflexive Pronouns
  4. Demonstrative Pronouns
  5. Interrogative Pronouns
  6. Relative Pronouns
  7. Indefinite Pronouns
  8. Reciprocal Pronouns
  9. Distributive Pronouns
  10. Emphatic Pronouns
 
1⃣ Personal Pronouns
Definition: These pronouns refer to a specific person or thing and change form based on number (singular/plural), person (first/second/third), gender, and case (subject/object).
 
Examples:
I, you, he, she, it, we, they (subject case)
me, you, him, her, it, us, them (object case)
 
👉 Example Sentences:
She is reading a book. (subject)
Give the pen to me. (object)
 
2⃣ Possessive Pronouns

Definition: These show ownership or possession.

Examples:
mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs
 
👉 Example Sentences:
This bag is mine.
Is this umbrella yours?
 
(Note: Don’t confuse them with possessive adjectives like “my”, “your”, “his”, etc.)
 
3⃣ Reflexive Pronouns
Definition: These refer back to the subject of the sentence. They end in -self (singular) or -selves (plural).
 
Examples:
myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves
 
👉 Example Sentences:
She prepared the food herself.
We blamed ourselves for the mistake.
 
4⃣ Demonstrative Pronouns
Definition: These point to specific things or people.
 
Examples:
this, that, these, those, such, certain, yonder etc.
 
👉 Example Sentences:
 
This is my book.
Those are my shoes.
 
5⃣ Interrogative Pronouns
Definition: These are used to ask questions.
 
Examples:
who, whom, whose, which, what
 
👉 Example Sentences:
Who is at the door?
What are you doing?
 
6⃣ Relative Pronouns
Definition: These are used to join a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. They relate to the word they modify.
 
Examples:
who, whom, whose, which, that
 
👉 Example Sentences:
The boy who won the prize is my brother.
I know the man whose car was stolen.
 
7⃣ Indefinite Pronouns
Definition: These refer to unspecified persons or things.
 
Examples:
someone, anyone, everyone, no one, something, anything, nothing, each, few, many, several, all
 
👉 Example Sentences:
Someone is at the gate.
Many are called, but few are chosen.
 
8⃣ Reciprocal Pronouns
Definition: These show a mutual relationship or action.
 
Examples:
each other, one another
 
👉 Example Sentences:
The two friends help each other.
We must love one another.
 
9⃣ Distributive Pronouns
Definition: These refer to persons or things one at a time, not collectively.
 
Examples:
each, either, neither
 
👉 Example Sentences:
Each of the boys was given a gift.
Neither of the roads is safe.
 
🔟 Emphatic Pronouns
Definition: These are the same as reflexive pronouns but are used to emphasize the subject.
 
Examples:
myself, yourself, himself, etc. (used for emphasis)
 
👉 Example Sentences:
I myself saw him stealing.
She herself cooked the meal.

What is a Noun?

Types of Nouns
There are several types of nouns, based on meaning and usage:
 
1. Proper Noun
Definition:
A Proper Noun is the name of a specific person, place, or organization. It always starts with a capital letter.
 
Examples:
Persons: Amitabh, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi
Places: Kolkata, Amazon River, India
Institutions: Harvard University, United Nations, Google
Days and Months: Monday, August
Festivals: Diwali, Christmas
 
Sentences:
Ravi lives in Delhi.
Amazon is the largest river in South America.
We visited the Taj Mahal last year.
 
2. Common Noun
Definition:
A Common Noun is a general name for a class or category of people, places, or things.
 
Examples:
Persons: boy, girl, doctor, teacher
Places: city, river, school, country
Things: book, pen, bag, chair
 
Sentences:
The teacher is in the classroom.
A girl is playing in the park.
Dogs are faithful animals.
 
3. Collective Noun
Definition:
A Collective Noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things considered as a single unit.
 
Examples:
People: team, committee, jury, army, crew
Animals: herd, flock, swarm, pack
Things: bunch, bundle, set, collection
 
Sentences:
The jury has given its decision.
A flock of birds is flying in the sky.
He gave me a bunch of grapes.
 
4. Material Noun
Definition:
A Material Noun is the name of a material or substance from which other things are made. These are usually uncountable.
 
Examples:
Natural: gold, silver, iron, copper, water, air
Processed: plastic, glass, cement, sugar, oil
 
Sentences:
The ring is made of gold.
Water is essential for life.
Plastic is harmful to the environment.
 
5. Abstract Noun
Definition:
An Abstract Noun is the name of a quality, action, or state that cannot be seen or touched. It refers to ideas, emotions, and concepts.
 
Examples:
Emotions: love, anger, fear, happiness, sorrow
Qualities: honesty, bravery, kindness, intelligence
Actions/States: childhood, freedom, growth, education
 
Sentences:
Honesty is the best policy.
Her courage was admirable.
Freedom is everyone’s right.
 
6. Countable Noun
Definition:
A Countable Noun refers to things that can be counted. They have both singular and plural forms.
 
Rules:
Can be used with numbers: one book, five pens
Can be used with a/an: a car, an apple
Can be pluralized: chairs, students, bottles
 
Examples:

apple, table, student, bird, car, house, idea

Sentences:
I have three pens.
An idea can change the world.
There are ten students in the class.
 
7. Uncountable Noun
Definition:
An Uncountable Noun refers to things that cannot be counted individually. They do not have a plural form and are treated as singular.
 
Rules:
Cannot use a/an with them
Use quantifiers like: some, much, little, a lot of
 
Examples:
Substances: water, milk, oil, sugar, air
Concepts: information, advice, knowledge, honesty, fun
 
Sentences:
Please give me some water.
She has a lot of experience in this field.
Too much sugar is bad for health.

Definition of a Sentence:

Types of Syllables:

1. Open Syllable

“ti-ger” → “ti” is an open syllable.
 
2. Closed Syllable
Definition: A syllable that ends with a consonant and contains a short vowel sound.
Example:
“cat” (ends with consonant ‘t’, short ‘a’)
“rab-bit” → both “rab” and “bit” are closed syllables.
 
3. Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) Syllable (Also called “Magic e” syllable)

6. Consonant-le Syllable
Definition: A syllable that ends with a consonant followed by ‘le’.
Example:
“ta-ble” → “ble” is the consonant-le syllable.

7. Diphthong Syllable
Definition: A syllable that includes a gliding sound made by combining two vowel sounds.
